Coal contains sulfur, but when it burns, it is not sulfur itself – it is sulfur dioxide.

Sulfur exists in its elemental form, while sulfur in coal is present as compounds, including inorganic and organic compounds. Upon combustion, it turns into sulfur dioxide or sulfur trioxide. In the presence of water vapor, it reacts with hydrogen in the gas to form hydrogen sulfide. The product obtained after desulfurization, regeneration, and melting is elemental sulfur.
During the coking process, part of the sulfur in coal (about 60%) remains in the coke in solid form, while the other part is converted into hydrogen sulfide and ends up in the coal gas in gaseous form. Whether it is coke or gas, sulfur produced after combustion turns into sulfur dioxide, rather than sulfur.
