Is a biological trickling filter or a biological filter better for treating low-concentration toluene waste gas?
What do you mean by low concentration?
After drip filtration, the compound content is high, and the conditions are easy to control; especially in the north, considerations must be given to operation during winter. The method we used for a pharmaceutical factory in Hebei was trickle filtration; their filter beds previously had issues, resulting in unstable performance.
I’ve learned that in terms of engineering applications, the biological method is not effective for treating toluene, but it works fairly well for hydrogen sulfide. Why is that?
If you have to choose between a biological filter and a trickling filter, you should go with the trickling filter, as its liquid phase is recycled and no wastewater is generated. If other methods are available, plasma is recommended.
For LZ’s case, it’s best to carry out pretreatment first; it is difficult to carry out biochemical treatment on toluene, and the results are not good due to its low biodegradability. If pretreatment is done to break open the benzene ring, then any type of filter can be used afterward; personally, I think a biological filter is the better option.
I carried out the adsorption of toluene exhaust gases a long time ago; using an adsorption column gave good results, and the desorption process was also simple.
