Who has used the liquid-phase CLAUS process? BV Company has described a method in which, after burning sulfur, the heat generated is first recovered to produce electricity; sulfur dioxide is then liquefied and pressurized before being injected back into sulfur-containing natural gas wells. There, the injected sulfur dioxide reacts with hydrogen sulfide present in the wells to form elemental sulfur, resulting in a significant reduction in the hydrogen sulfide content in the extracted natural gas. This allows for an increase in the processing capacity of existing facilities.
There are already plants equipped with such liquid-phase Claus units at the Emden gas field in Germany
