What are the advantages of synchronous motors compared to asynchronous motors?
The speed of a synchronous motor remains constant, unaffected by the load, and it does not consume reactive power, thereby improving the efficiency of electrical equipment
Synchronous motors are primarily used to improve the power factor and enhance the efficiency of the power grid. Generally, small motors are asynchronous; the synchronous motors I have come across are those with a capacity of over 10,000 Kw, while those with lower capacities are usually asynchronous.
If more high-voltage synchronous generators are used, the corresponding compensation for high-voltage reactive power can reduce the need for high-voltage reactive power capacitors, thereby saving investment; however, synchronous generators require more maintenance compared to asynchronous generators.
Nearly 20 years of engineering practice have shown that large-capacity transmission systems exhibit superior performance in terms of efficiency, power factor, and dynamic characteristics compared to asynchronous machines; among them, shaded-pole synchronous machines are the best choice!
Does that mean that synchronous machines are actually more advanced than asynchronous machines and more energy-efficient, aside from the fact that they require more maintenance?
Apart from the benefits of the aforementioned group discussions. The downside is that it cannot be used in large quantities, otherwise, due to the insufficient reactive power, it is very likely to affect the normal operation of the entire power grid.
