The function of the pump body bypass line

What is the purpose of the connection line between the inlet and outlet of the centrifugal pump inside the device? The bypass valve has never been seen to open, whether the pump was operating normally or during shutdown for maintenance (it remained closed throughout).
Should this line be connected when the pump is under maintenance for an extended period to prevent the pipelines from freezing?
Low-flow protection! Frequently used.
Is the object of protection the pump body? Why is that said?
It’s possible, but I haven’t seen the operators use this valve, and the operating procedures don’t mention this either!
Why is a bypass line used for shutdown purging?
Functions: 1. Anti-freezing 2. Maintaining minimum pump flow 3. Purging

When the main pump switches to the standby pump, the fluid flows through the main pump’s bypass line rather than entering the pump itself, allowing the main pump to be purged.
