Is it possible to use a vacuum differential pressure transmitter to measure gauge pressure?
I haven’t heard of vacuum differential pressure transmitters; is there something wrong with that term?
Does that mean the differential pressure transmitter was used in vacuum conditions before? Theoretically, gauge pressure is the pressure relative to atmospheric pressure, and it is 0 when there is no other pressure present other than atmospheric pressure. If a differential pressure transmitter has its high-pressure side connected to a process stream and its low-pressure side open to the atmosphere, the resulting pressure can be considered gauge pressure. Additionally, higher requirements are generally placed on differential pressure transmitters used for vacuum measurement; therefore, the transmitter itself should meet the standard requirements for pressure measurement. So, I think if the range and other specifications meet the requirements, it should be suitable for measuring gauge pressure. I haven’t seen it in person though; I’m a beginner, so please correct me if I’m wrong.
There is no fundamental difference between differential pressure transmitters and pressure transmitters; it is merely the difference in installation that leads to variations in the measurement results. Personal opinion.
In fact, a pressure transmitter is also a differential pressure transmitter. The pressure transmitter measures gauge pressure, and gauge pressure = absolute pressure – atmospheric pressure; in other words, the pressure transmitter measures the difference between absolute pressure and atmospheric pressure. The two are essentially the same; the only difference is that the pressure transmitter has just one interface. Therefore, as long as the range is fine, a differential pressure transmitter can measure pressure.
No problem, you just need to perform the conversion on DCS yourself. Subtracting the local atmospheric pressure gives the gauge pressure.
