The desalination technologies that are currently in commercial use can be mainly divided into two categories: distillation and membrane methods. Distillation can be further divided into multi-stage flash distillation (MSF), multi-stage distillation (MED), and vapor compression (VC). The film method mainly includes two approaches: electrodialysis (ED) and reverse osmosis (RO). Other desalination techniques include freezing and solar stilling. Could someone provide some information on multi-stage distillation (MED)?
Multi-effect distillation (MED) is one of the earlier methods that were successfully developed for seawater desalination. Its principle involves using the temperature difference between high-temperature steam and seawater for heat exchange, followed by the condensation and collection of the evaporated water vapor. However, due to factors such as the easy scaling of pipelines caused by boiling seawater, the multi-effect distillation method is not as widely used as the multi-stage flash method. Based on the process flow, the multi-effect distillation method mainly features the following two types of equipment: 1. Submerged tube evaporator ; 2. Shell-and-tube evaporators can be further divided into vertical tube evaporators and horizontal tube evaporators.
