When insulating pipes, a moisture-proof layer must be installed outside the insulation layer. So, what is the purpose of installing a moisture barrier? Can it be canceled? Please discuss it.
Of course, it’s intentional – once water gets into the insulation material, its insulating properties are compromised, so water must not enter the insulation layer. That’s why a moisture barrier is needed
The moisture barrier is a component of the insulation structure used for waterproofing and moisture prevention; it is crucial for maintaining the insulation properties of that structure, and cannot be omitted.
In addition to rain, another important factor in the environment is the high amount of water vapor; therefore, the purpose of the moisture barrier is to prevent rainwater or moisture in the air from penetrating the insulation layer. If moisture penetrates the insulation layer, it will reduce the insulation effect.
The main reason is that water vapor in the air condenses into water droplets; as more and more of these droplets accumulate, the insulation properties of the material deteriorate once it gets wet. Therefore, an additional moisture-proof layer must be installed outside the insulation layer, and it needs to be constructed very tightly.
The function of the moisture barrier is to prevent water vapor in the air from condensing on the cold steel surface, thereby slowing down corrosion on that surface. The insulation structure must have a moisture-proof layer.
Another function of the moisture barrier is to prevent dew formation on the outer surface of the pipes.
To prevent atmospheric moisture, a moisture barrier is extremely important in practical applications. There was an instance where the moisture barrier of a spherical tank was not properly installed, which led to severe corrosion of the tank; it is therefore recommended to use a moisture barrier at all times.
Prevent water vapor in the environment from entering the insulation layer and condensing within it, thereby reducing the insulation efficiency.
