Generally, in chlor-alkali processes, hydrogen is the fuel for ignition; factors such as lightning can also play a role. Additionally, hydrogen may be forced into chlorine, and when the hydrogen content in chlorine becomes high, an explosion occurs.

The hydrogen vent pipe can catch fire when struck by lightning; a high hydrogen content in chlorine can cause the system to explode, and the hydrogen scrubber can also explode.
