We use concentrated sulfuric acid to dry acetylene, and during this process, the waste sulfuric acid tank releases sulfur dioxide gas along with a large amount of black solid. Does anyone know the reason for this? I hope for your guidance!
It shouldn’t be caused by the decomposition in the acid waste tank; I think it’s those small black particles that appear as a result of acetylene carbonization. What material is the acid waste tank you’re using made of? A sulfuric acid concentration of 93–98% is acceptable. The most important thing is to control the temperature of the acetylene gas entering the tower.
It’s not the decomposition that occurs in the acid tank – I was wrong; it’s the decomposition of the waste acid inside the tank. We use PVC material for these acid tanks, and the sulfuric acid concentration at the outlet is 85%. The temperature in the tower is below 20 degrees. Haven’t you encountered such a situation?
Black particles appear in the acid tank only when the temperature of acetylene is not well controlled and the dehydration process prior to that is not effective; otherwise, it occurs very rarely.
