How to distinguish maleic anhydride from maleic acid? Please provide chemical identification methods if possible. Thank you.

I’m not familiar with chemical methods, but instrumental analysis is an option. You can just use an LC-MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry). Or use temperament together

Weigh approximately equal amounts, dissolve them in water, and then titrate with an alkali; the compound that consumes more alkali is the anhydride, while the one that consumes less alkali is the acid. 2. Alternatively, take a small amount of the same sample and dissolve it in water; measure its pH with a pH meter – those with a low pH value are anhydrides, while those with a slightly higher pH value are acids. 3. Melting point detection can also be used, as anhydrides and acids have different melting points. Maleic anhydride is around 52~53°C, while maleic acid is around 130°C. 4. The simplest method is to find a small piece of stainless steel, place a little of each of the two samples on either side of the steel piece, and use a lighter to heat the area between the two samples; the substance that liquefies and vaporizes first is maleic anhydride.
