Even when there is a gas protection cabinet on site, do the personnel still need to wear gas masks? Especially for maintenance and instrumentation personnel. The main toxic substances in our factory include: trichlorosilane, silicon tetrachloride, hydrogen chloride, chlorine (in small quantities), sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc.!
The purpose of using gas masks is to enhance workers’ protection during labor and to isolate toxic substances at the scene. The provision of gas masks should be determined based on the actual conditions of the enterprise; generally, consideration is given to the personal protective needs of employees, with one mask provided for each person, and the gas-filtering cartridges are replaced regularly. However, if the enterprise uses full-face masks, which are expensive and suitable for special areas, it is recommended not to provide one per employee; instead, emphasis should be placed on proper usage management and maintenance – the masks should be cleaned after each use and the chemicals used in them should be replaced. There are many uncertainties with maintenance and instrumentation personnel! During maintenance, there are likely to be many leakage incidents, and the frequency of entering hazardous areas is also high. For the above reasons, I think a full-face mask should be provided in case of emergencies. But I’m also worried that other people might have objections. I wonder if there’s a better way!
I think you can set up an emergency cabinet for personal protective equipment in the maintenance team, equip it with special PPE according to the nature of the work, and regularly check whether it is properly stored and maintained. Ensure that all emergency protective equipment is available and usable when needed. Of course, responsibility for managing the emergency cabinets must also be assigned to specific individuals, and there should be inspection records.
My idea is to establish a special protection allocation system! The items in the emergency cabinet are used only for emergencies. The special protective equipment issuance system is similar to that for work safety equipment, but it needs to be returned. When entering a dangerous area or carrying out work with risks! In my opinion, it’s sufficient to grant the relevant personnel the necessary permissions; in other words, under normal conditions only a few people should be able to open the emergency cabinet, and registration should be kept when it is taken out
