I recently encountered a problem during design: due to equipment constraints, namely the short gas pipeline (with a diameter of DN150), there isn’t enough space on the horizontal pipe in front of the turbine flow meter to install a T-type filter; therefore, a Y-type filter has to be installed on the vertical pipe ahead. Is this acceptable? Turbine flowmeters have high requirements regarding gas quality; I wonder whether a Y-type filter can meet those requirements
It depends on what gas you are transporting. If the gas is relatively clean, there isn’t much of a problem, but it’s important to note that poor filtration can cause significant damage to the impeller; generally, a filtration precision of 20–50 microns is sufficient. Primarily, the Y-type filter has a limited space for storing impurities, which requires frequent cleaning. Additionally, it must be installed at a distance from the flow meter that complies with the requirements regarding the straight pipe section length of the flow meter. It is recommended to use a cylindrical filter
It transports natural gas, but the pipelines are quite complex, so impurities such as slag are definitely present.
A Y-type can be used; that’s what we use here. The filter element has a precision of 20u; be sure to remove it regularly for cleaning, especially during the initial period after it starts operating.
It depends on your requirements for filtration precision and the flow rate of the medium! Compared to Y-type filters, T-type filters have better pressure resistance as well as other superior performance characteristics; if lower requirements are in place, a Y-type filter will suffice!
