I am a junior college student majoring in computer-controlled systems, with a career focus on CNC lathes. My current courses include microcontrollers and PLCs. Would it be difficult to pursue a different career path (such as working with PLCs), or is it better to specialize in CNC lathes? At the moment, I don’t have much expertise in CNC lathes. However, the most time-consuming aspect of working with CNC lathes is CNC programming. Is there any potential for growth in this field? Is there still more room for development in learning PLC?
There are many areas in which this field can develop, such as computers, automatic control, instrumentation, and low-voltage monitoring. Whether it’s PLCs or numerical control programming, electrical systems and instrumentation all relate to control mechanisms; one just needs to gain more exposure to and learn more related knowledge. It’s possible to work in any of these fields, and the choice depends on one’s interests. My advice is to learn as much as possible – the broader one’s knowledge of control mechanisms, the better.
Actually, the field of CNC machines is a good one to work in. You can learn about the principles behind CNC machines as well as how to maintain them; don’t focus only on programming. It’s also useful to master the setup and adjustment of these machines. In addition, it’s important to have an understanding of mechanical processing and various materials.
It’s actually a matter of specialization and expertise; I think we should focus on CNC technology, striving to become experts in it, while also understanding other control technologies.
I support the second floor’s view – it’s quite comprehensive. Interest is very important! Don’t narrow down your future direction too early; remember that!
Practice is the most important. Of course, you also need to have an interest in this field and a sense of responsibility.
Find some books on control theory and read them, then find a simulation software to work on a project. Siemens is a good choice – there’s plenty of material available, and it’s simple to use.
