Dear seniors, I have been reviewing the documents prepared by the vendor for the system recently, and I’m not quite clear about the difference between the two terms: SOE and SER. What does SOE stand for? (Sequence of Events.) What is SER? I checked the vendor’s documentation; it states that Sequence of Events (SOE) messages originating from the Triconex or Trident system can be integrated with V8 I/A Series-based SOE messages in the same data repository. However, our vendor classifies SOE under DCS rather than ESD, while SER is classified under ESD (ESD SER and Alarm Summary). But according to the text in red, SOE belongs to Triconex – so where should it be classified? What is the main difference between SOE and SER? Please help me understand
SOE (Sequence Of Events): A system for recording the sequence of events. SOE records the time when a fault occurs as well as the type of event, such as what type of fault occurred at XX minutes, XX seconds, XX milliseconds when a certain switch was activated. In ESD/SIS systems, SOE is generally available; it can identify the earliest accident record, facilitating the analysis of the root causes of equipment or process failures. Moreover, they all rely on inputs that are independent of the system, and they have no impact on the system’s control. “The statement that \"SOE belongs to TRICONEX\" is incorrect; TRICONEX does have SOE software, but other systems also have their own SOE systems. I’ve really never heard of SER in SIS systems.
SER is short for SEQUENCE EVENT RECORDING, and it has the same meaning as SOE. The SOE function is a feature that can be implemented in ESD or SIS systems, as well as in DCS systems; it can even be achieved through signal alarms. The key issue is that to implement this function, the system or instrument must have sufficient time resolution to capture the primary cause alarm interlock signal, so as to analyze the main reason for the alarm-induced shutdown.
SOE (Sequence Of Event) is a system for recording the sequence of events. It determines the timing of the on/off actions of the monitored device based on the recording time of changes in the Data Input (DI) level (with a precision of 0.7 ms), and is primarily used for post-incident analysis to identify the root cause of an incident. The concept of SOE (Sequence Of Events) has been well explained by everyone. Additional points: 1. It is mostly used in the power industry for event recording. 2. The required precision is usually around 1 ms. There is actually another key issue here, which is time stamping. If you’re interested, we can discuss this further
Personally, I think SOE and SER are the same thing; they are both accident records.
When working on engineering projects, it’s fine to consider SOE and SER as synonymous. They all belong to the sequential event recording function. The key parameter here is the resolution level. Just having this feature does not mean that the manufacturer meets the requirements; different manufacturers offer different time resolutions, so it is necessary to check and confirm whether they meet your needs.
