We use 1.0 MPa steam for the heat tracing of the pipelines in our coking unit. Can 0.4 MPa steam produced by the unit itself be used for the heat tracing of its pipelines?
The 0.4MPa steam generated by the plant can be used for heating the pipelines of the plant, but to ensure that the heating system is not affected by the start-up and shutdown operations of the plant, 1.0MPa steam can be fed into the 0.4MPa steam pipeline system as a backup.

Under normal circumstances, 0.4 MPa steam tracing is more than sufficient. But I don’t know what temperature the heated medium is required to reach? If it contains amino acidic gases, the temperature should be maintained above 85°C; otherwise, salts will form and block the pipelines. In this case, 1.0 MPa steam tracing must be used.
With heat tracing, there is no need to use very high pressure; 4 kilograms of pressure is more than sufficient

Of course. A saturation temperature of 140 degrees is more than sufficient. There’s no need to worry about any backup solutions for the heating steam; if it stops working, it’s sufficient to use a heating medium as a protective measure. Making the process too complex isn’t advisable.
