Next comes the preliminary design, construction drawing design, and on-site coordination during construction. Your mentor is right; process flow diagrams are extremely important for all the different specialties in a design institute – they constitute the foundation and essence of design. Designing process flow diagrams is one of the main tasks of process engineers, which primarily includes PFDs (Process Flow Diagrams) and P&IDs (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams). Other major tasks include process calculations, such as material balance, heat balance, valve calculations, pipe diameter calculations, and so on. As for the floor plans, piping diagrams, and layout drawings, it depends on the circumstances of your workplace. The current situation in China is that in large design institutes, the personnel responsible for process engineering and piping are separate; floor plans, pipeline network diagrams, and layout plans fall within the scope of the piping department, while process engineering is not handled by them. In smaller design firms, all these processes have to be carried out.
