Pipe flange pressure rating: 4.0 MPa. Strength test pressure: 4.5 MPa. The strength test pressure is higher than the pipe flange’s pressure rating – is such a design feasible? What measures need to be taken during on-site pressure testing?
Personally, I think unless it’s a brittle material, there shouldn’t be any major issues with such strength tests. Since the pressure test lasts for a short period of time and is conducted at 1.5 times the design pressure, its purpose is to verify the pressure resistance of the entire piping system. When designing pipes, the choice of material is determined based on the operating pressure and temperature of the medium, rather than using the test pressure to determine the pressure rating of the material.
