Dear HaiChuan alumni, I am currently conducting a safety assessment for a coastal project. The project design mentions civil engineering terms related to dams and embankments. There is a concept called the breath-holding dike; I would like to ask everyone: 1. What does the breath-holding dike mean? What is its function? 2. This is a rather niche issue, with little research done on it. I looked it up online and found the following answer: A water-stop dike can be understood in this way – its function is to prevent water from passing through, and it takes the form of a dike that serves a protective purpose. The need to prevent water leakage arises because in coastal projects, the materials used to construct cofferdams are such things as gravel and boulders, which are permeable to water; thus, there is still some degree of water seepage. To prevent this, clay is placed in the still water area, as clay particles can fill the small gaps between the stones. As the clay settles, it forms an impermeable barrier against flooding. This is what is known as holding one’s breath
