The theoretical plate serves as a link between tray towers and packed towers; one can first determine the number of theoretical plates required to meet the separation requirements through simulation, and then determine the height of the packing layer based on the type of packing chosen. For packing, empirical data is generally available for the number of theoretical plates per unit of packing.
