When people talk about differentials, they usually think of cars. In fact, the differential I’m referring to has nothing to do with cars at all; it is simply a safety device. The differential is circular in shape, with a circumference inside; thin steel wires are wound around the shaft, similar to the structure of a tape measure. When in use, the differential is attached to a fixed object, and the wire rope inside it is connected to the operator’s safety belt (with ready-made connectors available). The working principle of the differential is as follows: when the hoist moves downward at a slow speed, the steel cable in the differential is pulled out gradually. But when the speed increases suddenly, the safety mechanism inside the differential automatically locks the steel cable, so that even if the hoist falls, people will not be in danger thanks to the protection provided by the differential!
