Can the head be welded directly to the equipment flange? Is there any basis for this? Thanks

sure. However, there are requirements for the height of the straight edge of the head. For details, see HG20583 (P305)
There is definitely no problem with butt welding of the head and the equipment flange, but if it is welded to the 4701 equipment flange, it should be noted that the distance from the outer weld of the flange to the tangent line of the head should not be less than 2 times the thickness of the head, and not less than 13mm. If the straight edge height of the head is not enough, lengthening of the straight edge height of the head should be considered when designing on the drawings.

Normal pressure can be considered. Direct welding is not recommended for pressure-bearing parts. You can refer to the JB/T4700 standard. Because the stress level at the small end of the flange is higher, it will be superimposed on the stress of the head itself.
One of our Type 2 reactors is made in the United States, and the flange is welded on the upper head.
With such a long straight edge, it may not be convenient to manufacture. There should be no problem if the head is directly welded to the equipment flange.
