Is natural gas a corrosive gas?
Generally, if natural gas contains sulfur, it is corrosive.
Natural gas generally contains sulfur, such as hydrogen sulfide gas, which forms hydrosulfuric acid in the presence of water, thereby causing corrosion to pipelines.
The main component of natural gas, as generally referred to, is methane, but it also contains other components such as ethane, propane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, and others. Furthermore, natural gas is divided into treated natural gas and untreated natural gas; treated natural gas is non-corrosive, its main component being hydrocarbons, with all other components having been removed. If untreated natural gas contains hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide in sufficient amounts, it becomes a highly corrosive gas.
Natural gas contains H2S and CO2 in amounts that can be corrosive to pipelines.
