The Code for High-Rise Buildings stipulates that air ducts should not pass through fire walls or expansion joints; if it is necessary for them to do so, a fire damper must be installed at the point where they pass through the fire wall; When passing through a deformation joint, fire dampers should be installed on both sides. However, in some high-rise buildings, fire dampers are not installed at the points where air ducts pass through fire walls; in other cases, when air ducts pass through expansion joints, a fire damper is installed on only one side, while none is installed on the other side. Additionally, the placement of some engineering fire dampers is incorrect. As required, the fire damper should be installed right against the fire wall, and the thickness δ of the duct passing through the wall and connected to the fire damper must be ≥1.6 mm. The ducts within 2 meters on each side of the fire wall should be insulated using non-combustible materials. However, in some construction projects, the fire dampers on the ventilation and air conditioning ducts are installed arbitrarily, far away from the fire walls. The ducts in between are neither specified to be thicker nor provided with any protective measures, posing potential hazards.
That’s the contractor’s problem; no matter how comprehensive the design, it is still necessary to take into account the feasibility of construction as well as the client’s willingness to invest. There’s nothing that can be done about it – such are the limitations imposed by authority.
