In gas chromatography, there is a technique called programmed temperature rise, which comes in three levels: third-order, fifth-order, and ninth-order. What is the significance of this? Thank you! :)
The number of stages in the programmed temperature rise refers to the different temperature increase steps during this process. In the settings panel, there are: Step0: Temp= Time=; Step1: Rate= Temp= Time=; Step2: Rate= Temp= Time=; and so on. Step1, Step2, Step3, etc., are what are known as the stages, right? That seems to be the meaning; I’m not sure if it’s clear enough~~~
A staircase refers to stairs; in the absence of stairs, it is called constant temperature. The advantage of this approach is that there are minimal fluctuations, but it is difficult to separate substances with complex compositions. When there is one level of stairs, it is referred to as grade 1. By changing the temperature, it is possible to improve the separation efficiency or reduce the separation time
5 and 9 basically don’t mean much; there’s no real need for that many, 3 is more than enough. When buying a chromatograph, there’s no need to worry about this parameter
Yes, for ordinary chromatography, third-order is sufficient; analyzing one sample in this way probably takes an hour or two. If more time is required, it’s not possible to analyze two samples in a day. I think it’s better to use a constant temperature when possible, as it provides stability. When using programmed temperature rise, drift can sometimes occur, but for complex samples, first-order or second-order is generally used.
