Coking is short for carbonization; it is a process in which heavy oils (such as heavy oil, vacuum residue, cracked residue, and even asphalt) undergo cracking and condensation reactions under high temperatures, resulting in the production of gases, gasoline, light diesel, light paraffin oil, heavy paraffin oil, and petroleum coke. The reaction mechanism of delayed coking is essentially similar to that of thermal cracking; the only difference is that in the heating furnace tubes, the feed oil is kept from undergoing cracking reactions, and instead this process is delayed until a dedicated coke tower, where cracking and condensation occur to produce coke and other fractionated oils. In the coking reaction, heavy aromatic hydrocarbons are essential for coke formation, and the condensation reaction is a process in which heavy aromatic hydrocarbons react with alkenes simultaneously.
