As we all know, the 103J syngas compressor has two high-level tanks for seal oil; why don’t the other two units have such high-level tanks for seal oil? For example, the 105J chiller.

The seal of 103J is a floating ring oil seal. The sealing oil system of this floating ring oil seal features a high-level oil tank, which is located about 4800 mm above the machine shaft (i.e., the sealing point); the upper part of this oil tank is connected to the pressure of the sealing gas; According to the principle of hydrostatic pressure, the oil pressure at the seal should equal the air pressure in the oil tank plus the hydrostatic pressure resulting from the difference in oil level height. Therefore, as long as the liquid level in the oil tank remains constant, the oil pressure between the inner and outer surfaces of the sealing ring will always be greater than the air pressure by ΔP = hr, where h is the height from the oil surface to the compressor axis, and r is the specific gravity of the lubricating oil, 870 kg/M2. Based on this principle, the oil and gas pressure regulation in the floating ring type oil seal system is achieved by adjusting the liquid level in the upper oil tank, resulting in very high precision of regulation. 103-J is divided into two cylinders with three sections; therefore, each of the high-pressure and low-pressure cylinders has a high-level tank, also known as a seal oil high-level tank, which is different from ordinary high-level tanks.

Still haven’t explained why a high-level tank is needed? It only explained the principle; can the 103J model do without a sealed oil level tank, just like the 105J model?
The principle of the seal oil tank was explained above; its function is to provide protection after the seal oil pump stops working, thereby preventing gas leakage. An ice machine does not have a seal oil tank because it, along with air compressors, operates at low pressures.
