I would like to ask why ball valves equipped with gearboxes or pneumatic actuators should be installed vertically, that is, in horizontal pipes with the actuation device located above the pipe. Can they be installed in vertical pipes? Thank you
It can be used in vertical pipes, but not those with gearboxes, as this would cause the lubricant in the gearbox to leak
Generally speaking, for valves with relatively large driving mechanisms, such as the types of valves mentioned by the original poster, since the driving mechanism is heavy, installing the valve horizontally ensures that the valve stem remains vertical at all times. If the valve is installed vertically, the heavy actuator head exerts a lateral force on the valve stem due to gravity, causing the stem to deflect. This not only increases the torque required to open and close the valve but also accelerates wear, as well as having an adverse effect on the brackets that support the actuator head on the valve. Therefore, under normal circumstances manufacturers recommend installing such valves horizontally, but this is not absolute; if the manufacturer agrees, it is possible to install additional support for the drive head when necessary, or to provide extra support at the installation site for the drive mechanism so that its weight does not act on the valve stem, allowing horizontal installation as well. The actuation heads of some valves are quite special; for example, in hydraulic and pneumatic valves where the piston is perpendicular to the valve stem, vertical installation increases wear on the piston.
