I have a very basic question: does the inner or outer ring of the gasket serve a sealing purpose? I’ve never been entirely sure about this, so I hope everyone can help me out
The inner or outer ring serves to prevent the gasket from shifting under pre-tensioned or operating conditions, thereby avoiding leakage and failure.
The inner ring is the twisted skeleton, while the outer ring serves two purposes: it helps to center the assembly by making contact with the bolts, and it prevents the sealing part from being blown away (for reinforcement).
