Amid the special \"opportunity\" of general downturn in the national coal chemical industry, Yankuang Guotai Chemical started construction on Phase 3 of its project, which involves an investment of 3.68 billion yuan and a production capacity of 400,000 tons of acetic acid per year. Once in operation, Guotai Chemical, with an annual production capacity of 1 million tons, will become China’s largest and the world’s third-largest vinegar producer. It will help the entire Lunan coal chemical industry base to rise against the odds during times of crisis, enabling it to become a leader in the international coal chemical sector. Yankuang Guotai Chemical Co., Ltd. is a large-scale high-tech coal chemical enterprise established through a joint venture between Yankuang Group, which leverages its resource advantages and adjusts its industrial structure, and American Guotai Coal Chemical Holding Co., Ltd. Since its commissioning, up to the first quarter of 2009, Guotai Company had produced a total of 920,000 tons of methanol and 757,000 tons of acetic acid, generating sales revenue of 5.85 billion yuan and paying nearly 900 million yuan in taxes and fees. The Guotai Chemical project, whose foundation was laid on April 18, aims to produce 400,000 tons of acetic acid per year; the total investment in this project is 3.68 billion yuan. The main components of the facility include an acetic acid production unit with an annual capacity of 400,000 tons, along with supporting systems such as power boilers, air separation units, gasification units, gas purification systems, cryogenic extraction units for carbon monoxide, methanol synthesis units, distillation units, refrigeration stations, and various utility systems. The project requires 577 mu of land, and its construction period is 3 years. The project was approved and registered by the Provincial Development and Reform Commission in 2008, and it is a key construction project at the provincial level. This project adopts the methanol low-pressure carbonylation acetic acid production technology, for which Yankuang Group holds independent intellectual property rights, and which has been successfully put into industrial use while continuing to be improved. It features reliable technology, high-quality products, low energy consumption, low costs, high profitability, and reduced emissions of waste gases, wastewater, and solid waste. Upon completion of the project, Guotai Chemical’s annual acetic acid production capacity will reach 1 million tons, ranking it first in China and third in the world, thus making a significant contribution to the rapid and healthy development of China’s coal chemical industry in the future. Ding Hui, chairman and general manager of Guotai Chemical, told reporters that the current economic crisis has brought \"unique opportunities\" to Guotai Chemical. “ With sufficient cash flow, Guotai Chemical took advantage of the low prices of building materials such as steel and cement to construct Phase 3, resulting in considerable cost savings. Currently, the feasibility study reports for Phase 4 and Phase 5 of Guotai Chemical are also being prepared.
