There was also an interesting incident during the training period: our starting salary was very low, at 1500, with 1215 actually reaching our hands, and the salary was paid on the 15th of each month. No settlement allowance was given when we first started working, and we had to buy bedding for 300 yuan, which was deducted from our salary; as a result, we only received 915 yuan in salary by September 15th. Everyone was extremely frustrated at that time, as many companies provide some sort of settlement allowance, which would at least give employees some extra money for expenses. We saw the sledgehammer that was used in Zhang Ruimin’s once-famous incident of smashing refrigerators; it was probably a substitute, but in any case it served as a symbolic object. And that’s how our one-month training program came to an end. It was held at Qingda Vocational College, so up to that point we still hadn’t had the chance to see the true face of the company; we remained immersed in our endless admiration for this great enterprise, Haier----
