How to deal with dishonest alumni

At the end of last year, a new colleague joined the company; he was hired specifically to handle the technical aspects and equipment upgrades for the new project. The boss said he was my alumnus, and upon asking, I found out that we were indeed from the same department – he was one grade below me, but in a different major. We grew closer over time, got along well, and often drank and chatted together. Recently, I accidentally discovered that he is highly dishonest—he buys expensive raw materials, costly instruments as well, and overstates the travel expenses. For example: the thermostat accessory I bought cost 75 yuan, but he gave me an invoice stating that it cost 120 yuan. I am involved in other projects; I hold shares as a minor shareholder. But the boss always likes to discuss with me the issues related to the new projects, covering topics such as staffing, technology, marketing, equipment, etc., and sometimes this alumnus also inevitably becomes part of the conversation. To be honest, this matter actually has little to do with me; I can just ignore it and turn a blind eye to it. When talking to him privately, I don’t know how to bring it up and remind him! Don’t compromise your principles just because of the word ‘alumni’. Whether one is an alumnus or not, what really matters is how that person behaves.

If that’s the only downside, then just be careful in the future. If he generates 1 million in benefits for you each year, and takes 100,000 from the company including those amounts, then you’re still making a profit. A good manager is one who knows how to make use of a person’s strengths while avoiding their weaknesses. But his greed must be controlled; it cannot be allowed to grow.
This situation is quite common these days; just be more careful. If you really think it’s not worth it, you can simply avoid using it.
I think you should investigate more thoroughly before making a judgment. It’s normal for newcomers to not be familiar with market conditions when buying things; it’s understandable if they overpay. Some people do indeed need to use more expenses for business trips, and just because you save money doesn’t mean those who don’t save are doing something wrong. Even strangers can come up with convincing reasons to explain their actions. So it’s better to understand everything completely – after all, this relates to a person’s character, reputation, and even their job. It’s better to wait until you know everything clearly and are confident before taking any further action
