The first domestic project for producing acid through the desulfurization of coke oven gas has begun to show results. According to China Chemical Industry News Network, during the 2009 China International Energy Conservation, Emission Reduction and New Energy Technology Expo, a miniature model of the process for producing acid from coke oven gas carried out by Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group attracted considerable attention. The current global financial crisis continues to spread, exerting an increasingly severe impact on the real economy. The world economy is in a deep recession, and the pressure on China’s economic growth to slow down is further increasing, posing serious challenges for steel companies. How to recreate advantages in a crisis? Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group proposed to further deepen its understanding and practice of the principle that \"science and technology are the primary driving force for development,\" and to increase the contribution of science and technology to the group’s growth as well as to its ability to address current crises. The project for producing acid through the desulfurization of coke oven gas is an important measure taken by Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group to make full use of its technical research and development efforts, enhance the company’s independent innovation capabilities, and reduce air pollution caused by SO2. The desulfurization and acid production processes for coke oven gas at Taiyuan Iron and Steel Company are the first of their kind in large-scale steel mills in China. The project came online in April 2008; its main function is to separate hydrogen sulfide gas from coke oven gas, which is then used to produce concentrated sulfuric acid with a concentration of 98% as a raw material for the manufacture of ammonium sulfate. By employing world-leading technology, it is capable of processing 130,000 cubic meters of coke oven gas per hour. Once in operation, it not only reduces air pollution caused by sulfur dioxide but also prevents harmful impurities such as hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen cyanide in coke oven gas from affecting the quality of stainless steel. This project can reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 12,238 tons per year, produce 18,800 tons of 98% concentrated sulfuric acid, and generate 43,860 tons of steam at 5.2 MPa. It not only reduces pollutant emissions but also transforms waste into valuable resources.
It can only be considered \"the first of its kind among large domestic steel mills.\" In fact, this kind of technology is not new; it was already in use in China over 20 years ago.
Is it the ammonium acid method used in the past for treating sulfuric acid exhaust gases?
It seems to be using Topsoe’s WSA process
Currently, the environmental protection situation in China is even more severe, and exhaust emissions need to be strictly controlled. Desulfurization for acid production has become an essential process for environmental protection and waste utilization in modern coking enterprises, and it is worth promoting in various coking and coal processing companies.
