The mother liquor in our plant’s ammonium sulfate saturator, as well as the gaskets used in the crystallization system during the initial phase of operation, were all ordinary gaskets. It has been over two years since the plant started operating, and maintenance tasks have become increasingly frequent; when disassembling valves and pipes, severe corrosion of the connection flanges is often observed. I don’t think it’s related to flange corrosion or gaskets; in your case, it’s likely that the material of the flange does not meet the required standards. We have encountered similar situations before.
It’s not a problem with the flange, right? The original poster said it was from two years ago. Besides, flanges used in this area are usually made of stainless steel, so the same type will be used if it needs to be replaced
With the same stainless steel material, there can be huge differences in performance – what tests were carried out during acceptance? Can it be confirmed that all requirements are fully met?
Regular 316L flanges are quite expensive. As far as I know, a considerable portion of stainless steels do not have sufficient amounts of nickel and titanium, which results in rapid corrosion.
Standard 316L flanges do not experience such problems.

Genuine 316L stainless steel generally poses no problems when used in ammonium sulfate systems. The pipes, flanges, and valves I’ve used in the past were all made of 316L; I’ve been using them for almost ten years, with some of them having been in use for 7 or 8 years as well, and no problems have occurred. Of course, it’s important to purchase genuine products – there are too many fake ones available these days, so it’s better to buy from reputable manufacturers.

Our unit also uses 316L for sulfur ammonia, and PTFE gaskets are used. Very good, there is no corrosion as you mentioned.
