The aqueous phase reflux is generally arranged in the back-extraction and first extraction stages. The purpose is to ensure that it remains within the normal range of process parameters. Especially in the back-extraction stage, as the extraction capacity is increased, the flow rate of the organic phase rises; to maintain an adequate phase ratio, it is necessary to recycle the aqueous phase. The aqueous phase reflux tube generally has an opening in the side wall of the aqueous phase weir, allowing the liquid to flow by gravity into the reflux tube. Therefore, the height of the opening must be appropriate; if it is too high, air will enter, which not only affects the flow rate but also impacts the mixing process in the mixing chamber, and may even lead to emulsification. Furthermore, the return of the aqueous phase to the mixing chamber is driven by the suction force of stirring; therefore, the return flow rate should not exceed 1/5 of the normal flow rate. At the same time, the pipeline should have as few bends as possible; otherwise, due to insufficient stirring suction, the backflow volume will not meet the requirements and production needs cannot be satisfied.

Stirring has a very large impact on reflux. Disk stirring is generally used; the bottom of the tank must be level, with a distance of 10–15 cm between them. If the distance is too great, the suction power is not sufficient. When the return pipe enters the converging pipe at the bottom of the mixing chamber, it must not exceed the height of the intermediate partition inside the converging pipe. Of course, the partition should not protrude from the bottom of the tank either.
Is it necessary to add a flow meter for control? Is it necessary to install a control valve? Can an electric actuator be used for control valves?
There is one point I think is incorrect: the reflux ratio can be very high; in other words, almost all of the aqueous phase can be recycled, as is the case in the washing stage, where the majority of the aqueous phase is recycled.
