May I ask how to prepare water glass? Are there any things to keep in mind? What are the ingredients used for that kind of clay and mortar, and what is the procedure for mixing them? Thank you
A method for the composite modification of water glass, as well as a method for using the modified water glass in sand mixing. Application/Patent Number: 200810200720. This invention discloses a method for the composite modification of water glass and its application in sand preparation; water glass is thoroughly mixed with polyacrylamide in an amount corresponding to 0.2%–0.4% of the weight of the water glass. The resulting mixture is then placed in a rotating magnetic field generator for magnetization. This rotating magnetic field generator features a rated power of 3 KVA, a three-phase 50 Hz motor stator, an input voltage of 50 V, and a magnetization time of 15–60 minutes; after that, the mixture is left to rest for 12–24 hours, thereby completing the composite modification of the liquid water glass. When the above-modified water glass is used in molding sand, the 24-hour compressive strength is 0.15–2.10 MPa. Under the same conditions, the strength of water glass sand using chemically modified and then magnetically modified water glass as a binder is higher than that of water glass sand modified only chemically; furthermore, the disintegration resistance of the water glass sand modified according to the present invention is improved. The consistency of water glass mortar should be 33mm±3mm, and it should have sufficient fluidity during application. 2 The amount of sodium silicate fluoride to be added is calculated using the following formula: G = 1.5 × × 100. Where: G represents the percentage (%) of sodium silicate fluoride relative to the amount of water glass used; N1 is the percentage (%) of sodium oxide in the water glass; N2 is the purity (%) of sodium silicate fluoride. 3 The mechanical mixing method is as follows: (1) Add the filler and sodium fluosilicate to the mixer, mix them dry until uniform, then add sodium silicate solution and mix again until homogeneous. (2) Add sodium water glass and IGI acid-resistant ash to a mixer and mix them wetly for 2 minutes. (3) Add potassium water glass and KP1 powder to a mixer and mix them wetly for 2 minutes. 4 The manual mixing method is as follows: (1) Mix the filler with sodium fluosilicate and stir them dry until well combined, then gradually add sodium silicate solution and stir wetly until uniform. (2) Mix sodium water glass with IGI acid-resistant ash until uniform. (3) Wet-mix potassium water glass with KP1 powder until homogeneous. 5 The mixed water glass mortar must not have any additional materials added to it, and it must be used up before it starts to set (usually within 30 minutes after the addition of water glass). The ingredients for water glass putty and mortar should all be prepared following this procedure.
Sodium silicate and potassium silicate are the two types of water glass, commonly known as sodium metasilicate. Sodium water glass is an aqueous solution of sodium silicate, with molecular formulas of Na2O·nSiO2 and K2O·nSiO3. Potassium water glass is an aqueous solution of potassium silicate, with the molecular formula K2O·nSiO2. Sodium water glass is mainly used in civil engineering. Potassium water glass can also be used when high engineering requirements exist. High-quality, pure water glass is a colorless and transparent viscous liquid that is soluble in water. It appears light yellow or bluish-gray when containing impurities. In the molecular formula of sodium water glass, n is known as the modulus of water glass; it represents the ratio of the number of Na2O molecules to the number of SiO2 molecules, and is a very important parameter. The higher the n value, the greater the viscosity and strength of water glass, but its solubility in water decreases. When n is greater than 3.0, it can only dissolve in hot water, which causes difficulties in use. The lower the n value, the lower the viscosity and strength of water glass, and the more soluble it is in water. Therefore, in civil engineering, a modulus n of 2.6 to 2.8 is commonly used, as it is soluble in water and possesses high strength. The modulus of water glass produced in our country is generally between 2.4 and 3.3. The content (or concentration) of water glass in an aqueous solution is commonly expressed in terms of density or Baumé degree. The density of water glass commonly used in civil engineering is generally 1.36–1.50 g/cm3, corresponding to a Baumé degree of 38.4–48.3. The greater the density, the higher the content of water glass, and the greater the viscosity. Water glass is typically produced by combining quartz powder (SiO2) with soda ash (Na2CO3), and then calcining them at high temperatures of 1300–1400°C to form a solid. This solid is subsequently dissolved in hot water or in water under high temperature and pressure to yield a solution form of water glass. Water glass is produced by the reaction of silicon dioxide with sodium hydroxide.
