What are the differences between the stainless steel grades 316L and 314?
316L: Mo (2-3%) is added to the steel, resulting in excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength; 316L has a lower carbon content than 316; therefore, its resistance to intergranular corrosion is better than that of 316 ; It has high high-temperature creep strength. It can be used under harsh conditions, has good work hardening properties, and is non-magnetic. The maximum carbon content of 316L stainless steel is 0.03; it can be used in applications where annealing is not possible after welding and where maximum corrosion resistance is required. Its corrosion resistance is better than that of 304 stainless steel. 304 is a general-purpose stainless steel
A lot has been said about 316L above. But I really don’t know anything about 314, as mentioned by the original poster.
304: 0Cr18Ni9; 304L: 00Cr19Ni10; 316: 0Cr17Ni12Mo2; 316L: 0Cr17Ni14Mo2. For more details, please refer to the basic knowledge of stainless steel at http://bbs.hcbbs.com/viewthread.php?tid=21157&highlight=%B2%BB%D0%E2%B8%D6%BB%F9%B1%BE%D6%AA%CA%B6

Let’s talk about several types of stainless steel: 301, 17Cr-7Ni-low carbon. Compared to 304 steel, it contains less Cr and Ni; its tensile strength and hardness increase upon cold working. It is non-magnetic, but becomes magnetic after cold working. Trains, aircraft, conveyor belts, vehicles, bolts, nuts, springs, screens. 301L 17Cr-7Ni-0.1N–low carbon: This grade is based on 301 steel, with a reduced carbon content to improve the resistance of welds to intergranular corrosion ; By adding nitrogen, the insufficient strength caused by the decrease in carbon content is compensated to ensure the strength of the steel. Railway vehicle frames and exterior decorative materials: 304 18Cr-8Ni is a widely used steel that possesses good corrosion resistance, heat resistance, low-temperature strength, and mechanical properties ; It has good hot workability for stamping, bending, etc., and shows no hardening due to heat treatment (non-magnetic, operating temperature range: -196°C to 800°C). Household items (tableware of types 1 and 2, cabinets, indoor piping, water heaters, boilers, bathtubs); auto parts (windshield wipers, mufflers, molded products); medical devices; building materials; chemicals; food industry; agriculture; ship components. 304L 18Cr-8Ni-low carbon: As a low-C version of 304 steel, it has corrosion resistance similar to that of 304 steel under normal conditions; however, it exhibits excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or stress relief ; It maintains good corrosion resistance even without heat treatment, and can be used at temperatures ranging from -196°C to 800°C. Used in outdoor machinery in the chemical, coal, and petroleum industries where high resistance to intergranular corrosion is required, as well as in heat-resistant building materials and parts for which heat treatment is difficult. 304Cu 13Cr-7.7Ni-2Cu: The addition of Cu improves its formability, particularly its drawability, and its resistance to aging cracks, allowing for the fabrication of products with complex shapes ; Its corrosion resistance is the same as that of 304. Thermos flasks, kitchen sinks, pots, kettles, insulated lunch boxes, doorknobs, textile processing machines. 304N1 18Cr-8Ni-N is based on 304 steel; it has reduced levels of S and Mn, with the addition of N to prevent a decrease in plasticity, increase strength, and reduce the thickness of the steel. Components, street lights, water storage tanks, and water pipes: 304N2 18Cr-8Ni-N. Compared to 304, it contains added N and Nb; it is a high-strength steel used for structural components. Components, street lights, water storage tanks: 316 18Cr-12Ni-2.5Mo. Due to the addition of Mo, it exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, resistance to atmospheric corrosion, and high-temperature strength, allowing it to be used in harsh conditions ; Excellent work hardening property (non-magnetic). Equipment used in seawater for producing items via chemicals, dyes, papermaking processes, oxalic acid, fertilizers, and other means ; Photography, food industry, coastal area facilities, ropes, CD rods, bolts, nuts – 316L, 18Cr-12Ni-2.5Mo, low carbon. As part of the low-C series of 316 steels, it possesses the same properties as 316 steel, in addition to having improved resistance to intergranular corrosion. Among the applications of 316 steel, there are products that require special resistance to intergranular corrosion. 321 18Cr-9Ni-Ti: Ti is added to 304 steel to prevent grain boundary corrosion ; Suitable for use at temperatures of 430°C–900°C. Aircraft, exhaust pipes, boiler drums – 409L: 11.3Cr-0.17Ti–low C, N. Due to the addition of Ti, it exhibits good corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength. Products such as automobile exhaust pipes, heat exchangers, and containers that are not heat-treated after welding. 410L 13Cr-low C: Based on 410 steel, it has a reduced carbon content, and exhibits excellent workability, resistance to welding deformation, and resistance to high-temperature oxidation. Mechanical components, engine exhaust pipes, boiler combustion chambers, burners. As a representative ferritic steel, 430 16Cr features a low coefficient of thermal expansion, as well as excellent formability and oxidation resistance. Heat-resistant appliances, burners, home appliances, category 2 tableware, kitchen sinks, exterior decorative materials, bolts, nuts, CD rods, screens 430J1L 18-Cr0.5Cu-Nb–low C.N: Elements such as Cu and Nb are added to 430 steel ; It has good corrosion resistance, formability, weldability, and resistance to high-temperature oxidation. Building exterior decoration materials, auto parts, hot and cold water supply equipment. 436L 18Cr-1Mo-Ti, Nb, Zr: low C and N content, excellent heat resistance and corrosion resistance; due to the presence of Nb and Zr elements, it boasts good workability and weldability. Washing machines, car exhaust pipes, electronic products, pots with 3 bottoms. 410 13Cr-low carbon, as a representative steel of martensitic steels, has high strength but is not suitable for use in harsh corrosive environments ; It has good workability and hardens upon heat treatment (becomes magnetic). Blades, mechanical parts, oil refining equipment, bolts, nuts, pump rods, category 1 tableware (knives and forks). 420J1 13Cr-0.2C has high hardness after quenching, good corrosion resistance (magnetic). Cutlery (knife), turbine blades. After quenching, 420J2 13Cr-0.3C has a higher hardness than 420J1 steel (it is magnetic). Blades, nozzles, valves, rulers, tableware (scissors, knives).
The main difference is the carbon content. Of course, the price is different as well. 316L is more expensive, so it is common to use 304 in place of 316L.
Thank you to so many kind people; I’ve learned a lot
Product properties and uses of common materials. Series 200: 201, 202 – chromium-nickel-manganese austenitic stainless steels. Series 300 – chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels. 301 – has good ductility and is used for shaped products. It can also harden through machine speed. It has good weldability. Its wear resistance and fatigue strength are superior to those of 304 stainless steel. 302—Has the same corrosion resistance as 304; it has better strength due to its relatively higher carbon content. 303—Is easier to machine than 304 by adding small amounts of sulfur and phosphorus. 304— that is, 18/8 stainless steel. The GB grade is 0Cr18Ni9. 316—The second most widely used steel grade after 304, primarily used in the food industry and surgical instruments; molybdenum is added to it to confer a special corrosion-resistant structure. It is also used as \"marine steel\" because it has better resistance to chloride corrosion compared to 304. SS316 is typically used in nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities. 18/10 grade stainless steel generally also meets this application level. Model 321—has properties similar to 304, except that the addition of titanium reduces the risk of rusting in the welds of the material. 400 series—ferritic and martensitic stainless steels. 420—\"cutting tool grade\" martensitic steel, similar to the earliest stainless steels such as Brinell high-chromium steel. It is also used for surgical knives, and can be made very shiny. 430—Ferritic stainless steel, for decorative use, such as in automotive accessories. It has good formability, but poor heat resistance and corrosion resistance.
