Nickel and cobalt can be extracted from lateritic nickel ore, but there’s very little copper, right? Another by-product of red mud nickel ore processing is chromium concentrate! Typical manufacturer: MCC Ruimu (which has built a large wet processing plant in Papua New Guinea) 1

Zhejiang Huaguang extracts nickel-iron alloys via pyrometallurgical methods from lateritic nickel ore! It seems that the benefits aren’t very good these days either!

Honghe Henghao Mining also uses laterite ore, which is currently employed in three main areas: the first is in hydrometallurgical processing. Second, it is used for the smelting of nickel iron; a project to build a blast furnace for nickel iron smelting is currently under construction. Previously, electric furnaces were used to smelt ferro-nickel, but the results were not very good. Thirdly, it is used in combination with sulfide ores, with the sulfide ores serving as a sulfiding agent to sulfide laterite ores; this is currently the main method of use, and it yields very good results. In electric furnaces, the proportion of laterite that can be used can reach up to 50%
As far as I know, there is very little experience in processing laterite nickel ore in China at present, and even fewer projects that have been put into industrial production. Yuanjiang Nickel Industry mentioned above is a decent example, but its scale is quite small. The processing of laterite nickel ore represents a challenge on a global scale; even in some large foreign companies that are currently in operation, the costs associated with its processing are quite high, resulting in little economic benefit. Rui Mu is based on wet high-pressure acid leaching, and its future operating costs are estimated to be quite reasonable. China Nonferrous Nickel’s project in Myanmar is for producing ferronickel; the production process is relatively simple and the costs are low.
