Does long-term operation of the boiler feed water pump at low load cause damage to the pump?
Boiler feed pumps are usually multi-stage pumps with high head; operating them under pressure for extended periods can be harmful to the seals, so it is advisable to open the return valve slightly.
Operating in reverse flow reduces efficiency but is better for the pump; operating at low load for long periods is harmful to the impeller seals, as it means the liquid is subjected to work inside the pump but cannot be discharged, which also leads to an increase in temperature
Operation at low load for a long time damages the mechanical seal, resulting in leakage.
