On June 18th of this year, I attended Selenis’ first public open day. I was fortunate enough to ride in their company vehicle and see the entire production process. However, those who were invited, as well as media representatives from various fields, were strictly prohibited from taking photos or videos – this is Selenis’ strict policy that must not be violated! However, I can tell you that production operations in the plant are running smoothly and quietly, and Selenis has very effective safety measures in place; in particular, no medically untreatable safety incidents have occurred at the Nanjing integrated factory to date.

I have two promotional materials provided by Serranus, which contain some brief information on acetic acid production facilities: The acetic acid plant in Nanjing utilizes world-class advanced technology; it is the largest acetic acid production facility in China, with an annual output of 600,000 tons. The emulsion production facility utilizes state-of-the-art pressure reactors for the production of vinyl acetate and ethylene copolymer emulsions, while conventional reactors are used for the production of homopolymers and copolymers of vinyl acetate and acrylic acid. This product will be used to manufacture high-performance adhesives, high-tech glass fibers, and advanced low-VOC/low-odor coatings. The Nanjing emulsion plant is the ninth emulsion plant in Solutia’s global network. Since its operation began in 2007, the non-destructive testing facility in Nanjing has accumulated over 10 million hours of operational time, a record that is leading among peers. The VAntage fixed-bed process is employed, with significant improvements made to the catalyst; as a result, the space-time yield has increased substantially, and the consumption levels have also reached favorable values. The raw material ethylene is purchased overseas, while acetic acid is supplied by Nanjing Huisheng.
It should be the ethylene-based production process; I’m not sure if the catalyst is of the Bayer type
Serenis’ CO and H are supplied by Whiting, not the acetic acid mentioned on the 5th floor; Serenis itself produces acetic acid using the carbonylation process.
The annual production capacity of a single acetate production unit in Nanjing seems to be around 120 million, right? It is said to be the largest acetic acid production facility in the world. It’s just that since the supply of acetic acid far exceeds demand at present and the price is too low, it is operating at only half capacity. But the actual production capacity is very high.
