Recently, our company plans to install a coking unit, but the disposal of petroleum coke poses a problem. I was wondering if any of you who have coking units could tell me where you mainly use your petroleum coke?

It should be noted that sponge coke, also known as ordinary coke, is an amorphous coke produced from feed materials with high contents of resin and asphaltene. Visually, it appears sponge-like; the coke mass contains many small pores, and the walls between these pores are very thin with almost no internal connections. It is divided into electrode coke and fuel coke. Electrode coke: Produced from low-sulfur residue and wax oil feedstocks. Ordinary power electrodes for electric furnace steelmaking, and aluminum smelting anodes. Fuel coke: produced from high-sulfur, high-metal raw materials. Used for fuel, cement production, etc. Low-sulfur coke: sulfur content less than 3%
Hydrogen can also be produced using petroleum coke gasification units.
Currently, pinacol is in short supply in China, with most of it relying on imports; domestic production is extremely limited. However, domestic production is constrained due to technical reasons.
Agree with the 5th floor – the production of needle coke is constrained by raw materials and technology. Therefore, there are two possibilities regarding the petroleum coke produced by the new coking unit of the company in question: first, its sulfur content is relatively low, and it is generally used as anode carbon for aluminum electrolysis; the rapid development of the aluminum electrolysis industry in recent years has been one of the main factors contributing to the rise in the price of petroleum coke. Secondly, due to its high sulfur content, it can only be used as fuel, primarily in circulating fluidized bed boilers for power generation; however, its price is likely to be lower, so it has to compete with coal for electricity production. Of course, it is also possible to generate gas as mentioned on the 4th floor; a water-coal slurry gasifier can use petroleum coke as a raw material, but costs must also be taken into consideration. At present, the price of petroleum coke is still too high, making it less competitive compared to gasification.
We sold all our coke to nearby aluminum companies, and last year there was a severe shortage of supply. But it hasn’t been selling since the second half of last year, and now they’re even complaining that our coke has a high volatility level – something that never happened before; whenever coke is produced, there are always complaints!

Petcoke can be calcined using rotary kiln or batch furnace processes, but the feedstock coke must have low sulfur content.
The main users of high-sulfur petroleum coke are cement plants and power plants, while the main users of low-sulfur petroleum coke are carbon factories, aluminum plants, steel plants, etc.
