I have been researching Aspen Utilities recently and would like to understand the differences between it and Prosteam. If anyone who has used these two software programs could share their insights, I would be very grateful. Thank you.
Based on the Excel interface, ProSteam has developed state functions of water such as PVT, enthalpy, and entropy, as well as equipment functions for turbines, boilers, and more. Mathematical modeling is carried out by the modeler manually, using Excel’s calculation functions. It works just like the built-in functions in Excel. To take the simplest example, when two streams of steam combine into one, the flow rate can be calculated automatically in Utilities Planner by simply connecting the two streams to a third stream. In ProSteam, you have to manually enter the flow values in two fields, and enter the formula L1+L2 in the third field; the temperature also needs to be calculated inversely using enthalpy, That is, H1+H2. In short, ProSteam is nothing but a set of function extensions.
May I ask, is the Utilities feature in Aspen available within Aspen 2006, or is it a separate software package? I couldn’t find it in my Aspen 3006
This post was last edited by azz21 on 2009-7-19 22:22. I’ve just found the complete set of components for Aspen Suite V2006.5, including Aspen Utilities, HX-net, HTFS+, and so on; now I can use it. It’s more comprehensive than Aspen V7.0.

Personally, I find Aspen Utility to be more user-friendly
I’ve only used utility; I haven’t used KBC, nor do I have any KBC software. If anyone has it, could they send it to me?
The ProSteam software is too complicated and requires a lot of manual work. I’ve learned a little about Aspen Utilities, but I’m stuck because there’s no relevant material available to help me learn more. I’m seeking help from experts!
Both of these software programs are used solely for optimizing utility systems, such as steam systems and gas systems. Their optimization focuses primarily on maintaining balance in the quantities related to these utility systems, as well as on determining when certain utility equipment should be started or stopped. Specific optimizations regarding the operation of boilers and generators are not possible! KBC’s ProSteam software has been used in various projects on a substantial scale at Zhenhai Refining & Chemical, Yanshan Petrochemical, Guangzhou Petrochemical, Jinzhou Petrochemical, and other facilities! The current PETEO SIM5.0 version includes many of ProSteam’s functional modules, such as gas turbines, boilers, deaerators, and temperature and pressure reducers
Have you used utilities? For the heat exchanger module, how do I heat water using steam? It seems that only one logistics route can be entered in utilities
