In the low-temperature methanol wash section of ammonia synthesis, low-pressure nitrogen is introduced into the hot regeneration tower and the azeotropic tower containing methanol – what is the purpose of this? I hope fellow sailors can provide a systematic brief answer!
Is it added continuously during normal production? Where is it added?
What type of process is your low-temperature methanol washing using? I hope LZ can post your flowchart so we can discuss it together
Ours uses the Luchi process and is added at the bottom of the tower; it is also in use under normal conditions.

Pressure affects the boiling point; once the boiling point changes, many other things change as well. Therefore, nitrogen is introduced to alter the vapor pressure. For example, in the thermal regeneration tower and azeotropic tower for methanol, if the pressure is reduced, the boiling point also decreases, resulting in more methanol turning into vapor
The addition of nitrogen serves a stripping function, with the aim of more thoroughly recovering methanol from the solution, enabling full utilization of the methanol in the cycle and reducing its consumption.
How will you start the sulfur recovery process when nitrogen is added to these two towers? Are you using high-sulfur coal, or is it processed together with the acidic gases from refineries in sulfur recovery?
To enhance the stripping effect, the vapor pressure of the substance to be stripped is reduced, thereby further decreasing its concentration in the liquid phase and achieving a more thorough regeneration. There’s nothing special about it. Of course, the total pressure in the gas phase cannot change too much; if the gas cannot escape in time, adding nitrogen will have the opposite effect – the total pressure will increase, and the partial pressure of the substances to be stripped will also rise, which is not conducive to regeneration.
