Barium chloride does have promising prospects, but it has too many drawbacks: 1) it is a highly toxic substance, making its transportation and management difficult; 2) its price is high. Additionally, there are new technologies that can effectively remove sulfate ions, namely membrane separation processes, which can replace barium chloride. The sulfate ions removed in this way can be converted into mirabilite, thereby reducing costs and simplifying management. However, this process can only be adopted when the caustic soda production exceeds 150,000 tons. (Back to the topic, nowadays there are few caustic soda projects with a capacity of less than 150,000 tons.)
