The drying thermal efficiency is determined by the choice of drying method. For direct heating by hot air, methods such as drum drying and airflow drying have a thermal efficiency of 40–60%; whereas for direct heating by steam, systems like hollow paddle dryers and steam tube dryers can achieve a thermal efficiency of up to 90%. Depending on the properties of the material in question, a hollow paddle dryer can be chosen, as it is suitable for handling materials with high moisture content and viscosity. The heat source uses steam generated by a coal-fired boiler. The total drying heat can be calculated first, and then the coal consumption can be determined based on data such as the drying heat efficiency, boiler efficiency, heat released by coal combustion, and combustion efficiency.
First, it is necessary to determine the appropriate type of dryer; then, material balance and heat balance calculations are carried out to determine the heat required for drying. Finally, the coal consumption can be determined based on the thermal efficiency of the heating device and the heat losses of the dryer
