What are the development prospects for coal tar pitch-based carbon fibers?

There are various raw materials used to produce carbon fibers, and coal tar pitch is one of them. Coal tar pitch is the main product of coal tar processing, and finding a use for it is a challenge faced by companies that deal with coal tar processing. What are the advantages and disadvantages of preparing carbon fibers from coal tar pitch? What are the prospects? Comments and discussions are welcome.
It seems that nowadays most carbon fibers are produced by carbonizing polyacrylonitrile (PAN); the quality of asphalt-based raw materials cannot be guaranteed. Unless the process of converting asphalt into carbon fibers can be improved to enable stable production of carbon fibers, it will be difficult to develop such materials – at least not for high-end applications.

However, coal tar pitch must be modified before it can be used to produce pitch-based carbon fibers; intermediate-phase pitch needs to be prepared for this purpose. At present, China is relatively ahead in terms of processing technology, but industrialization still requires some time. Additionally, the market size for pitch-based carbon fibers may not be very large at the moment, and it is relatively easy to purchase products from Japan.
