Coal-to-natural gas projects are currently in full swing, with both mature and immature ones being launched in large numbers. The Tang Dynasty introduced what is claimed to be the most advanced blue gas technology in the world today, but it seems that this technology isn’t as impressive as claimed; there may even be an element of exaggeration. Moreover, there are no successful industrial applications of this technology anywhere in the world yet. Domestically, it’s not clear whether there are any mature technologies in this area.

BLUEGASTM technology: The one-step coal-to-synthetic natural gas technology developed by American company Megapower Energy (i.e., BLUEGASTM). Coal-to-synthetic natural gas seems attractive, but there are still certain risks associated with such projects; these risks lie at both ends of the process – first, coal prices, as high coal prices directly lead to higher costs for producing synthetic natural gas from coal； The second is the price of natural gas. It seems that an increase in natural gas prices is almost inevitable, so the risks associated with coal-based synthetic natural gas will decrease. Therefore, although coal-to-natural gas projects are worth studying and exploring, high costs and other factors raise the barriers to entry, making commercial operation difficult in the short term. Furthermore, although the coal-to-natural gas market is relatively stable, the key to its economic viability lies in raw material prices and pipeline investment; if these two issues are not resolved, the economic benefits of coal-to-natural gas remain minimal. Researchers at Yaha Consulting believe that China’s resource profile is characterized by an abundance of coal, but a shortage of oil and gas. The three major economic zones of the Bohai Rim, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Pearl River Delta have a high demand for natural gas. Meanwhile, regions such as Inner Mongolia possess abundant coal resources, but transportation costs are high. Therefore, converting coal in coal-rich regions into natural gas on-site will become another important strategic option, following coal-based power generation, coal-to-oil, and coal-to-olefins.
Blue gas technology does indeed look beautiful. Although there have been a few successful pilot tests, there are no facilities on a larger scale. Although Datang Huayin previously announced the use of this technology, it is unknown what the progress has been.
