I’m a newcomer. What is a process package, and what contents does it include? Can preliminary design be carried out with a process package? Thank you
The process package is primarily used to address the issue of technical sources; it forms the basis for engineering design. For its details, refer to the specifications for process packages of petrochemical plants (comprehensive technical process packages) (SHSG-052-2003).

A process package generally includes process package documentation (describing the plant flow), feasibility studies, PID and PFD diagrams, as well as specifications for some of the equipment
In simple terms, a process package is the detailed description of the specific process operations. A process package is the same as a briefcase; it contains technical documents for reference and use by design institutes during the design process! A process package mainly includes data packages such as the process flow, basic process data, process operating parameters, key process calculations, and process equipment; hence it is generally referred to simply as a process package. Simply put, with the process package, the design agency can use it as a basis for the preliminary design, followed by the detailed design. As for the provider of the process package, it can be purchased by the owner or by the contractor, depending on whether it is an EPC or PC arrangement. Process software packages are generally developed by the providers of patented technologies (design institutes, research institutions, or the client/owner) as a result of systematic research on a particular process technology; they provide guiding (principled) information regarding processes, equipment, and related process parameters (similar to the technical design practices used in China in the past). Based on the data from the process software package, along with the specific conditions of the site where the plant will be built, the engineering design for the project can be completed. If the process package does not come from the owner, then if Party A (the owner) wishes to use it, it must pay to purchase it and then assign a design institute to carry out the design work. The process package is provided to the design institute for design purposes. It’s not necessarily required to be very detailed; provide as much as they ask you to! Good companies provide quite detailed process packages, including everything from reaction conditions and control schemes to subsequent distillation processes! With this, the design institute can easily and accurately meet the owner’s requirements! I’ve seen a BP process package that’s a full 5 thick volumes in English! It provides a very detailed description of every aspect; the design institute can simply use this to create the drawings! Example 1: Process software packages are generally provided by technical suppliers, and they include the following: Process software packages are usually purchased by project owners from technical suppliers, and they comprise: 1 General Provisions…………………………………………………………………………………………1 2 Contents of the Process Design Package for Petrochemical Plants……………………………………………………………2 2.1 Design Basis…………………………………………………………………………………2 2.2 Process Description…………………………………………………………………………………3 2.3 Material Balance…………………………………………………………………………………4 2.4 Consumption Quantities……………………………………………………………………………………4 2.5 Boundary Condition Table………………………………………………………………………………4 2.6 Health, Safety, and Environmental Protection Considerations…………………………………………………………………4 2.7 List of Analysis and Testing Items…………………………………………………………………………5 2.8 Process Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (PID)……………………………………………………… 5 2.9 Suggested Equipment Layout Diagrams and Explanations………………………………………………………………5 2.10 List of Process Equipment…………………………………………………………………………… 5 2.11 Process Equipment……………………………………………………………………………… 5 2.12 Automatic Control Instruments……………………………………………………………………………… 6 2.13 Special Piping……………………………………………………………………………… 6 2.14 Data Sheet of Major Safety Relief Devices…………………………………………………………… 6 2.15 Catalog of Relevant Patent Documents…………………………………………………………………… 6 3 Process Manual……………………………………………………………………………………7 3.1 Process Description…………………………………………………………………………………7 3.2 Normal Operating Procedures……………………………………………………………………………7 3.3 Preparatory Procedures for Commissioning………………………………………………………………………7 3.4 Commissioning Procedures…………………………………………………………………………………7 3.5 Normal Shutdown Procedures……………………………………………………………………………7 3.6 Principles for Handling Accidents……………………………………………………………………………7 3.7 Catalyst Loading and Unloading………………………………………………………………………………7 3.8 Sampling………………………………………………………………………………………7 3.9 Analysis of Process Hazards and Control Measures…………………………………………………………7 3.10 Environmental Protection……………………………………………………………………………… 7 3.11 Equipment Inspection and Maintenance……………………………………………………………………… 7 4 Analysis and Testing Manual…… Supplementary Provisions.......................................................................................................................... For detailed content, refer to the Process Design guidelines of Sinopec Group Corporation
The process package forms the basis for the preliminary design; generally, the technology provider supplies the design foundations, which are used to develop the process package. After the process package is reviewed, the detailed design is carried out
