I’m starting a project that requires the use of several flow meters. I don’t have much information available; there are vortex flow meters, and I think their requirements are met, so I chose those ones. What other flow meters are commonly used in design? Rotameters and orifice plates go without saying – what other flow meters do you often use during design, procurement, or construction? Thank you
The type of flow meter to be chosen is determined by the material being handled and the process conditions, and cannot be decided based on personal preferences. As a designer, one should have a correct understanding of instrument selection, and some design specifications also provide regulations and guidelines regarding the instruments to be chosen. For measuring gases and vapors, vortex flowmeters are a good choice; they are also very suitable for low-viscosity liquids (less than 3 CP). Although the price is a bit higher, the maintenance and operation of vortex flow meters are very simple, and no additional components are required. For conductive liquids, an electromagnetic flowmeter is a better choice, while for non-conductive liquids, options such as rotameters or orifice plates can be selected depending on their fluid properties. For flow measurement in large-diameter pipes, insert-type or external sensing flow meters are preferable. For media that require precise measurement, a mass flow meter is preferable.
It was already mentioned upstairs... Let me add a bit more: for fluids with high viscosity that tend to crystallize, wedge flow meters can be used. For measuring oil quantities in storage tanks, in addition to mass flow meters, volumetric flow meters can also be employed. When high precision is required for large-diameter measurements, insert-type Coriolis meters or insert-type vortex flow meters are not suitable; it’s necessary to invest in a Coriolis meter. If the temperature isn’t very high, it’s best to use an integrated installation. Mean velocity tubes produce a low differential pressure, so it’s necessary to minimize the length of the pressure tapping pipelines.
The characteristic of vortex street flow is that the straight pipe section is very long, 20D in front and 5D behind. If you choose vortex flow meters for everything, it’s likely to cause headaches for the people responsible for installation.
Our factory uses a large number of vortex flowmeters, mainly from Rosemount and E+H. These flowmeters offer good performance, require minimal maintenance, allow for easy modification of internal parameters, and it is possible to set different flow units as needed. Moreover, vortex flowmeters with circuit boards of different sizes can be used interchangeably.

The selection of a vortex flow meter must be based on calculations; it may be necessary to use a reduced-diameter version, as it is difficult to measure low flow rates otherwise
