Dear sea friends, is the hydrogen chloride synthesis furnace in your companies used for direct cooling, or is it utilized to generate steam as a by-product?
We all reuse hot water. No steam is on.
It seems that recirculated water is used for cooling these days.
We used to have one here; the furnace could handle up to 100 tons per day. However, it hasn’t been in use since I arrived at the plant, as it is said that the steam pressure produced was too low, not sufficient to power the pumps. Eventually, it was completely removed during this year’s major maintenance
Hydrogen chloride synthesis furnaces: Traditional hydrogen chloride synthesis furnaces used air-cooled types or water-cooled jacketed furnaces, but they are now being gradually replaced by combined graphite furnaces. The two-in-one graphite furnace combines the functions of combustion synthesis and hydrochloric acid absorption, and generates steam as a by-product, offering advantages in terms of comprehensive utilization of thermal energy and reduced space requirements. It is understood that the two-in-one furnace used by Tianjin Dagu Chemical Plant has, after more than a year of research and development, successfully achieved comprehensive utilization of thermal energy. Specifically, the steam (low pressure) generated by the two-in-one furnace is sent to the PVC drying low-temperature fluidized bed as a heat source. The waste heat steam/water discharged from the fluidized bed is sent to the lithium bromide polymerization unit, where it is used in summer to produce low-temperature water, which is then fed into the cooling tubes of the polymerization reactor to increase its production capacity. It is understood that the two-in-one furnace produced by the German company Siegling is capable of generating high-pressure steam at levels of over 1.0 MPa stably; the cost of recovering this steam is very high. However, the price of a single unit of such a furnace is said to be 2 million euros, and none have been sold on the Chinese mainland to date. After all, China’s national conditions cannot afford such high prices.
A large amount of heat is generated when HCl is produced in the hydrogen chloride synthesis furnace (H2 + Cl2 = 2HCl + 43.8 Kcal), and the surface temperature of the furnace reaches around 500°C; this heat is wasted without being utilized. To make full use of this waste heat resource, in 2007 an investment of 6.146 million yuan was made to carry out renovations: the existing synthesis furnace was replaced with a graphite synthesis furnace that uses by-product steam, and auxiliary facilities such as hydrochloric acid storage tanks, membrane absorption units, and condensate pumps were installed. The flow rate of by-product steam is 6.25 tons per hour. The system is operating normally, and the renovation results have met the expected objectives. The original plan was to generate 40,000 tons of steam per year and save 5,181 tons of standard coal; currently, 6.25 tons of steam are generated per hour, resulting in 50,000 tons of steam produced annually and a savings of 6,430 tons of standard coal.

Hot water; in summer, lithium bromide units are used, and in winter, it is used for heating.

The by-produced steam, due to its low pressure, is difficult to utilize in the chlor-alkali production process; lithium bromide units can generally be considered for this purpose, while our plant uses water cooling. Decide whether to use steam or water cooling by conducting a cost-benefit analysis based on your factory’s energy usage patterns; choose the option that is more economical.
